Three decisions worth six figures

Take the full match. A 50% match on the first 6% of an $80,000 salary is $2,400 a year. Skipping a third of it costs tens of thousands by retirement.

Pick Roth or traditional on purpose. The account that wins is the one taxed at your lower rate: today's for Roth, retirement's for traditional.

Claim Social Security at the right age. Waiting from 62 to 70 raises your check by about 77% for life, and pays off if you live past about 80.
